Light weight drainage mats for sub-soil drainage

modular drainage cell planter box green roof New Zealand

Product Overview

Modular drainage cells for planter boxes, green roofs, podium decks, rooftop gardens and under artificial grass. MERZ Drain Cell creates a continuous void drainage layer beneath soil and growing media, allowing efficient water flow while protecting waterproofing membranes and supporting healthy root conditions for landscape planting.

Made from 100% recycled polypropylene. Higher compressive strength than standard market products. Available in 20mm, 30mm and 50mm heights to suit different application depths and load requirements. Fire resistant version available on enquiry.

DC50 – 50mm height, for deeper drainage layer requirements and intensive green roof systems.

DC30 1000 – large format 30mm panel.

Why Drainage Cells Over Gravel

Drainage cells weigh significantly less than gravel for the same drainage performance, reducing structural load on podium slabs and roof structures. They install quickly, can be cut to shape around penetrations and drains, and maintain consistent drainage performance without the risk of fine particles blocking the drainage layer over time.

Frequently Asked Questions about Drainage Cell

What size drainage cell do I need for my project?

The height of the drainage cell depends on your application and available depth. The 20mm DC20 suits shallow applications where space is limited. The 30mm DC30 is the most common choice for planter boxes, roof gardens and under artificial grass. The 50mm DC50 provides a deeper drainage layer for intensive green roof systems and applications with higher drainage volumes. Contact MERZ if you are unsure which model suits your project.

Can drainage cells be used under artificial grass on a concrete surface?

Yes. Drainage cells are well suited to artificial grass installations on concrete, pavers and other hard surfaces where surface water needs to drain away quickly. The cells create a continuous void layer beneath the grass backing, allowing water to move freely to drainage points rather than pooling on the surface.

Do I need a geotextile filter fabric over the drainage cell?

For planter box and green roof applications where soil or growing media is placed directly on top of the drainage cell, a geotextile filter fabric should be laid over the cells before adding soil. The fabric allows water to pass through into the drainage layer while preventing fine soil particles from migrating down and blocking the void space over time. For artificial grass applications, the grass backing itself typically acts as a filter layer.
