Coir Matting and Coir Geo Cells

Natural & Biodegradable Erosion Control Solution

Coir matting erosion control ground cover New Zealand

Coir Erosion Control Systems in New Zealand

Coir erosion control systems include coir matting and coir geo cells, manufactured from 100% natural and biodegradable coir fibre woven into open-mesh structures. Widely used across New Zealand for civil engineering, roading and environmental projects, these products stabilise soil, reduce erosion and support vegetation establishment on slopes, embankments and disturbed land. As the coir biodegrades it adds organic nutrients back into the soil, supporting native vegetation growth and providing long-term stabilisation without leaving synthetic residue in the environment.

Coir matting erosion control ground cover New Zealand

Woven open mesh matting made from 100% natural biodegradable coir netting. Holds soil in place on slopes and embankments while vegetation establishes. Available in multiple weights to suit slope gradient and environmental conditions. Available in 400gsm, 600gsm, 700gsm and 900gsm. Rolls from 1m to 4m wide, 50m length.

Co-edge yourself for slope embarkation in NZ

Coir Geo Cell is a woven coir geotextile formed into a honeycomb cell structure. Each panel is 6ft x 12ft with a cell depth of 150mm. Individual cells are 30cm x 30cm, also available in 40cm x 40cm. Designed for steep slope stabilisation where additional structural reinforcement is required. Cells are filled with soil and planted with saplings or seed to establish permanent vegetation cover.

Coir Logs in NZ

Coir logs are versatile multi-purpose biodegradable barriers made from tightly packed coconut fibre. Used for erosion control, sediment entrapment, slope stabilisation and waterway bank protection. Suitable for use in and around drains, swales, streams and coastal shorelines.

Why Coir?

Coir fibre is extracted from coconut husks and is one of the strongest natural fibres available. It has a service life of 4 to 5 years depending on site conditions, providing reliable protection while vegetation establishes. As it biodegrades it enriches the soil with organic matter, supporting native plant growth without leaving synthetic residue in the environment. Higher gsm weights provide greater mechanical strength and are suited to steeper slopes and higher-risk erosion environments. Lower gsm weights suit moderate slopes and lower-flow conditions.

Sustainability & Environmental Performance

Coir matting and geo cells are produced from renewable coconut fibre and are fully biodegradable. As the products decompose over 4 to 5 years, they contribute organic matter back into the soil, supporting long-term soil health, native vegetation growth and sustainable land rehabilitation. No synthetic residue is left in the environment once the coir has fully broken down.

Frequently Asked Questions about Coir Matting and Coir Geo Cells

How long does coir matting last in the ground?

Coir matting has a typical service life of 4 to 5 years depending on site conditions, moisture levels and climate. This is generally sufficient time for vegetation to establish and take over the stabilisation function before the mat fully biodegrades.

What gsm coir matting do I need for my project?

The weight you need depends on slope gradient and erosion risk. 400gsm suits moderate slopes and lower-flow conditions. 700gsm is suited to steeper slopes and larger civil projects. 900gsm provides maximum strength for high-risk, exposed or high-flow environments. Contact MERZ to discuss the right specification for your project.

Can coir geo cells be used on very steep slopes?

Yes. Coir Geo Cells are specifically designed for steep slope applications where matting alone does not provide sufficient structural reinforcement. The honeycomb panel structure holds soil and plant material in place on gradients where standard erosion control matting would not be adequate.

Is coir matting suitable for use near waterways?

Yes. Coir matting and coir logs are widely used for streambank stabilisation, river edge protection and sediment control in and around waterways. The natural biodegradable material is safe for aquatic environments and wildlife.
